Replacing broken roof tiles: matching the old ones

A replacement tile has to lock in with the tiles around it. That comes down to three things.

Profile, material and colour

  • Profile: the shape of the tile. It has to match so the replacement interlocks with its neighbours.
  • Material: concrete or terracotta. They differ in weight and surface, and they weather differently.
  • Colour: even a matching tile can look different at first, because the roof around it has weathered.

What helps find a match

  • A clear photo of the roof taken from the ground.
  • A piece of the broken tile, if one has come down.
  • Any spare tiles left in the shed, garage or under the house from when the roof went on.
  • The age of the house, if you know it.

Why one cracked tile matters

A single cracked tile can let in enough water to damage a ceiling. On one of Shane’s jobs, the cause of water-damaged ceilings was a small hole in one terracotta tile.

A slipped or dislodged tile leaves a gap in the roof in the same way.
